We know you have a lot of stories to tell, and here is your chance. Write your story and enhance it with illustrations, then send it to us for an opportunity to win a prize.

TO HELP YOU GET STARTED

When you write a creative story, you use three things:

  • Your feelings
  • Your thoughts
  • Your imagination

First, you need an idea.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Who?
  • What?
  • Where?
  • When?
  • Why?
  • How?

Story writers, more often than not, use the ‘Dramatic Arc’. This is just a fancy term for these five stages:

  • Exposition: You start by letting your readers know who is in your story, and where and when it is taking place.
  • Rising action: This is the part where things start happening. In a scary story this is where you hear footsteps in an empty house or arrive to school only to find everyone has turned into robots.
  • Climax: The exciting bit. Everything that happened so far has led to here, now all the real action happens. This is the part that everyone was waiting for.
  • Falling action: If going to school was the climax of your day, Falling Action would be your journey back home. This is where we start to lead to the ending scene; making sure that everything’s clear and no questions are left unanswered.
  • Resolution: This is the end –where all the loose ends are tied. Remember to keep this awesome.

Also – remember not every story has all of these stages –they are just tools to help you build your story and organize your thoughts.

Some more tips to help make your story the best it can be:

  • Use spell check when typing –spelling mistakes are a big no-no.
  • Use a dictionary –make sure you’re using the right words that convey the meanings you want to convey.
  • Ask an adult to read your story to check for any mistakes.
  • Don’t start your story with “once upon a time” –get straight into the action, it’s so much more interesting that way.
  • Make sure that the whole story makes sense and that every part fits into the story you want to tell us.
  • Unless it is essential to the story, the people and places in it should not magically change.
  • And remember, not all protagonists are people. Some of the most interesting protagonists happen to be animals, or imaginary creatures.
