International Children's Book Day

Every year on April 2nd, coinciding with Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday, the International Children’s Book Day (ICBD) is celebrated worldwide. This special day is dedicated to inspiring a love of reading and writing and highlighting the importance of children’s books. Each year, a different national section of International Board on Books for Young People is selected as the international sponsor for ICBD. The chosen section sets the theme and invites a distinguished author from the host country to write a message for children around the world, while a renowned illustrator is commissioned to design the official poster.

In 2026, International Children’s Book Day is sponsored by IBBY Cyprus, under the theme “Plant Stories and the World Will Bloom.”
