Every two years, the IBBY project "Silent Books, from the World to Lampedusa and Back" brings together a unique collection of wordless picture books from across the globe. This initiative aims to promote cross-cultural understanding and create meaningful connections among children, transcending language barriers. Since its launch in 2012, the project has played a vital role in establishing the first library on Lampedusa, serving both local children and young immigrants.

The collection, contributed by IBBY National Sections, includes over one hundred silent books from more than twenty countries. These books are housed at the Documentation and Research Archive in Rome (Palazzo delle Esposizioni), delivered to the Lampedusa library, and featured in a traveling exhibition that reaches audiences worldwide.

UAEBBY has been an active participant in this inspiring initiative, contributing silent books to the collection. These books are donated to libraries in Lampedusa, a key destination for refugees, and showcased through traveling exhibitions. By using the universal language of imagery, these books allow children of all languages and backgrounds to engage with stories, fostering empathy, creativity, and connection.

UAEBBY’s involvement underscores its commitment to inclusivity and cultural exchange, using the power of visual storytelling to bridge divides and bring people closer together.
