The never-ending gifts of books extend beyond providing readers with information or entertainment. They provide a sanctuary where individuals can safely explore the world around them, untangle complex internal processes, and potentially find a path to healing from trauma. Therefore, the UAEBBY places significant emphasis on promoting bibliotherapy, the practice of using books as therapeutic tools to address personal issues and challenges.
Our commitment to bibliotherapy encompasses a range of initiatives. In 2017, we pioneered an extensive series of workshops, the first of their kind, resulting in the training and graduation of the inaugural Emirati team of bibliotherapists. We also collaborated with esteemed bibliotherapists, authors, publishers, psychologists, and psychiatrists to compile an extensive catalogue of Arabic books suitable for bibliotherapy, with a particular focus on children who have experienced the effects of conflict and war. Furthermore, in 2018, UAEBBY unveiled the first Arabic guide to bibliotherapy, subsequently published in 2020.
